Camping World Truck Series LogoOn Wednesday, NASCAR announced that Iowa Speedway would be hosting a Camping World Truck Series race in 2009, after Mansfield Motorsports Park was unable to meet the requirements necessary to remain a NASCAR sanctioned facility. On the Mansfield Motorsports Park website, a notice was posted to fans stating "Due to the economic times that we are all facing, Mansfield Motorsports Park will not be hosting the 2009 NASCAR Truck Race." The move by the track is the first major sign that the economic client is affecting the smaller race operations.

The event originally scheduled at Mansfield Motorsports park on May 23rd was rescheduled to September 5th in Iowa.

“It is always exciting to go to a new venue and show the fans what the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is all about,” said NASCAR’s Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell. “The Midwest has some of our sport’s most loyal fans and Iowa Speedway produces some incredible racing as we’ve seen with the NASCAR Camping World East and West Series. We look forward to racing there this season.”

“We are extremely pleased to continue our strong relationship with NASCAR with the awarding of yet another NASCAR series race to Iowa Speedway,” said Iowa Speedway CEO Stan Clement. “We know from past experience that fans here in the Midwest will support this exciting new event.”

With the economic downturn, it has been difficult for race teams and tracks to secure sponsorship for the 2009 season. Mansfield Motorsports Park is not the only track struggling to find sponsorship for its national series events. As of December 17th, Watkins Glen International was yet to secure sponsorship for their event in August after Centurion Boats opted not to renew their contract with the track as primary sponsor.

Daytona International Speedway is enduring similar trouble. After being the official manufacturer of the track, Chevy was weighing its options and was likely to pull out as official manufacturer. Chevy has provided the pace car and service vehicles to Daytona International Speedway under its current contract with the track.
